On this day in 1904 my Grandmother Ogle, Willie J. Spencer, was born in Lois, Tennessee, in Moore County. She was the fourth of the seven children of Ira Lorenzo Spencer, the community's blacksmith and a farmer, and Lillie Ann Tripp. Ira and Lilly had six girls and one boy, Houston, the youngest child, and they moved from Moore County to Tullahoma so their children could attend high school. Grandmother graduated from Franklin County High School, and was class testatrix. She married Granddaddy, William Ellis Ogle, who was a wholesale grocer, and their only son, Phillip Ellis Ogle, was my father.
Grandmother and Granddaddy lived their entire married life in Winchester in Franklin County, Tennessee, where Dad was born in a house on High Street. Shortly after his birth in 1937 they moved a couple of blocks to 319 North Jefferson Street, which is where they lived most of their lives. Grandmother volunteered in her community, serving the local Red Cross and working as a pink lady in the local hospital, but her primary vocation was management of their home and investing Granddaddy's income from his employment. ("Ellis would have never bought a chicken coop if it weren't for me.")
How I miss her!
