Battle of Kings Mountain

The Battle of Kings Mountain, in which frontier riflemen including Tennesseans under the command of John Sevier defeated a loyalist force commanded by British Major Patrick Ferguson, took place on October 7, 1780. The victory was a turning point in the Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War, and Washington defeated British forces under Cornwallis at Yorktown a year later. Ferguson's death during the Battle of Kings Mountain is depicted in the painting by Alonzo Chappel.
