Battle of Puebla

On May 5, 1862, Mexican forces commanded by Ignacio Zaragoza defeated French forces commaned by Charles de Lorencez in the Battle of Puebla, which is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo. It was a stunning defeat, and the battle is celebrated in Mexico, particularly in the State of Puebla, as a matter of national pride.

In the United States, at least here in East Tennessee, it is a day to celebrate Mexican culture and visit your favorite Mexican restaurant, but the defeat of the French forces is significant to American history as well. The Civil War was underway, and the French defeat rendered it unlikely the French would enter the war on the side of the Confederates.
