Battle of Sullivan's Island

On June 28, 1776, South Carolinian forces under William Moultrie and Charles Lee successfully defended Charleston, South Carolina, from British invasion during the Battle of Sullivan's Island.  A palmetto fort on Sullivan's Island proved impervious to bombardment from the British ships attempting to land troops for an invasion, and the English broke off their attempts, not to return to South Carolina until 1780. Now you know why there is a palmetto on the South Carolina flag.
