On August 22, 1587, a second voyage to establish an English colony at Roanoke in what is now North Carolina arrived after an earlier, failed attempt. When an English ship returned to Roanoke in 1590, the settlement was abandoned. We know this as the Lost Colony of Roanoke because there has never been a satisfactory explanation of what happened to more than one hundred people. The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved in a fence post. Nearby Croatoan Island was not searched due to a brewing storm.
